Lionel Leo Hampton April 20, — August 31, was an American jazz vibraphonistpianist, percussionist, and bandleader. Lionel Hampton was born in in Louisville, Kentuckyand was raised by his mother.

Shortly after he was born, he and his mother moved to her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Beginning in FebruaryHampton and his band played at the University of Idaho 's annual jazz Sky Larkin - Still Windmills, which was renamed the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival the following year.
